I’m pleased to announce the first in a series of free downloads I’m creating to help writers in their research. A Place to Start is just that – a list of books and articles to give you a place to start your research. Each book entry has the book or manuscript name, author (or translator) and a summary of the contents of the book.
The first APtS is Medieval Cooking & Food References, and lists 11 books to get you started.
All of the APtS mini-books are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License.
So go ahead. Click on the link below to grab it for yourself!
If you find APtS: Medieval Cook & Food helpful or otherwise liked it, please leave me a comment and let me know!

How your writing can affect you.

Okay, this simply isn’t fair. I’m three pages into Chapter 14 of TMA; Alex is at the hospital, and she’s talking to a doctor who’s tired and just yawned. Wouldn’t you know it, I start yawning too. I know yawns can be contagious, but this is a little much, don’t you think?
This isn’t the first time something I’ve written affects me. Scenes where my characters feel desolation or despair bring me to tears as I write them*. Their joy is my joy. It can make it really difficult to write. Going through the emotional roller coaster can leave you drained at the end of the day. I don’t know if I want to write like this, be so close to the characters like this, for the rest of my writing career. For now, though, I just cling to the hope that even if my readers don’t cry at the scene, I’m able to get the emotions to them through my words.
Looks like Twitter Tools is working again, though the post for yesterday’s tweets includes more than just yesterday’s but that’s okay. We’ll wait to see if it does its job again tonight before cheering aloud.
On the writing front, I’ve completed the minimum crits required for my writing group, but I’m not going to leave it just there. My goal is to do the equivalent of at least 3 chapters for everyone, and I’m most of the way there. I’m taking a break from doing crits to work on Chapter 14 (as I mentioned earlier). Hopefully I’ll get that done today, and back to crits tomorrow. Next week is going to be a short week, and while I’ll have my laptop with me, I don’t know how much work I’ll get done during Thanksgiving.
* I’m like this in the play by post and play by email games I’m involved in. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve emailed Dustin and said “You made me cry, you bastard. Excellent job!”.
