The Surge
January 10th, 2008
Looks like I did take my own advice from yesterday’s post. I’ve gotten a lot of writing and editing done in the past couple of days. Three chapters of TMA, for a total of 10,099 words. One of the chapters is almost 5000 words in and of itself. It’s more or less one scene, and I haven’t figured out where to cut it. But I don’t care. I’ll go back and look at it again when it’s time to do revisions. At that time I’ll figure out where to cut it - or if I even will.
I recommend you keep an eye on the WIP meter at the top of the right-hand column. As I write (and remember to update it), you’ll be able to see how much closer I’m getting to the goal. I’m aiming for 100k words. It’ll be easier to add to if an agent or editor wants more, and I’d much rather add than remove.
However, in Chapter 9, I’ve had to cut about 2k words. Why? Because it was stuff all based on a premise that I got rid of in the first three chapters. Instead, I’ve got to write a bunch of new stuff to reflect some changes, and add in what I should have put in there when I first wrote it. Luckily, I’ve never had any experience in what Alex is going through right now, but it makes things that much more difficult for as I don’t have that experience to draw on. So, I’ll write what I think would happen, and hope my crit group will point out my deficiencies. ![]()
